The part-time senior developer: a new freelancing model

I see a new freelancing model emerging among developers in the AI era: the part-time senior.

The product is not always central

In a huge number of “tech” companies, the product is not really central. It only exists to support a business, whatever that business is. Fintech, edtech, healthtech: the software often plays a supporting role.

In these companies, there is often one person (the CEO, a partner, someone a bit technical) who can vibe-code the program or programs the business needs to run.

The vibe-coding wall

But vibe-coding hits a wall fast:

  • security
  • scalability
  • more and more bugs
  • older features that break

The fix: a senior, over time, part-time

A senior who knows the trade, who can come in for one or two weeks at the start to straighten everything out, put a harness around the AI agents, set guidelines, build a clean CI/CD pipeline… so the projects can keep being vibe-coded. Yes, I am a senior who encourages the habit, and I own it.

The results:

  • an architecture that fits
  • regular course corrections
  • an eye kept on security
  • a real senior over the long run

All of it for a fraction of a senior’s monthly cost, since they work two to four days a month on the project.

In practice

This is exactly the model I work with:

  1. An intensive reset when needed: architecture, security, pipeline.
  2. Regular follow-up for the life of the project: one day a week, two days a month… it is flexible.
  3. The guarantee of someone who does not fall asleep on a technology.

There is also a version of this where there is no risky vibe-code in-house at all, and the senior simply comes in a few days a month to update and maintain what needs it.

This model answers a broader shift in the developer market.
